William Shakespeare

William Shakespeare was born in 1564 and died in 1616. He was born, and died, in the town of Stratford-on-Avon, but spent his working career in London. Here he is:

He is widely considered the greatest author of all time in the English language, both for his amazing command of style and his penetrating psychological insight. His plays are essentially the foundation of modern English drama; perhaps not every last one is a masterpiece, but the best ones—HamletKing LearOthello, and others; Michael Masiello, you are welcome to weigh in here on which plays are his best—are among the greatest literature ever written. His poems are also great works of art.

Shakespeare’s work had an immense impact on early modern English; words and phrases from his plays are still in common use, from “All’s well that ends well” to “Once more into the breach” to “wild-goose chase”. (Words and Phrases Coined by Shakespeare) His plays are still performed today around the world, are studied in schools throughout the English-speaking world, and at least some of his work has been translated into over 100 languages (including Hamlet translated into Klingon, with Macbeth and Much Ado About Nothing in the works):

Modern works based on Shakespeare’s plays range from the American musical and movie West Side Story to the American musical and movie Kiss Me, Kate, to the Japanese movie Ran, to movie versions of plays from Hamlet to Romeo and Juliet, to Giuseppe Verdi’s opera Otello and Pyotr Tchaikovsky’s ballet Romeo and Juliet. . .
